In a recent announcement by TasteAtlas, a renowned food and travel guide platform, India’s iconic ‘filter coffee’ secured an impressive second position on the prestigious ‘Top 38 Coffees In The World’ list. This recognition highlights the global acknowledgement of India’s unique and aromatic brewed beverage.

Topping the list is ‘Cuban Espresso,’ also known as Café Cubano or Cafecito, originating from Cuba. This espresso variant features sweetened espresso, traditionally infused with natural brown sugar, resulting in a creamy foam.

In contrast, Indian filter coffee is celebrated for its simplicity and effectiveness. Brewed using a dedicated coffee filter machine, the process involves boiling water in a vessel called a “decanter” and adding finely ground coffee powder to the filter. The coffee is then meticulously brewed, producing a rich and flavoursome beverage. This method of coffee preparation has become deeply ingrained in the culture and tradition of South India, where filter coffee is more than just a drink; it is a cultural staple.

In South India, it is common for individuals to set up the filter the night before, ensuring freshly brewed coffee is ready to kickstart the day. The final concoction, a blend of this brewed coffee with warm milk and sugar, is typically served in a distinctive small glass or tumbler made of steel or brass. The second-place ranking for Indian filter coffee underscores its significance and popularity not just as a beverage but as an integral part of daily life in the region.
