Pune: In a disclosure that has generated surprise and concern among various sections of society, Somnath Zende, a Police Sub-Inspector assigned to the riot control squad of the Pimpri-Chinchwad Police Force, is currently under scrutiny for winning a prize of Rs 1.5 crores on the online gaming platform ‘Dream 11’ on October 10.

Certain members of the public and political figures have expressed reservations regarding the appropriateness of a police officer participating in such activities during working hours. However, Zende has clarified that he did not engage in any wrongdoing as he played the game during his free time.

According to the information provided, Somnath Zende resides in Jejuri village in Pune district and has been serving in the civil service for approximately 15 to 16 years. While his family is pleased with their winnings from the online game, the investigation into this matter is expected to be delayed. The question of whether Zende was playing an online game while on duty is a subject that necessitates investigation.

Based on the information received, if this is indeed the case, he may face disciplinary action for using a mobile device while on duty and for neglecting his responsibilities. However, it is not a criminal offense to play games such as ‘Dream 11’ during working hours. Appropriate measures will be taken regarding the use of mobile phones and engaging in gaming activities while on duty.

Speaking to Pune Pulse, Somnath Zende, Police Sub-Inspector, stated, “Dream 11″ is a gaming platform that encompasses various sports such as fantasy cricket, football, basketball, and more. It is an online game where users create virtual teams consisting of real-life players and earn points based on the performances of these players in actual matches. These games are widely endorsed by numerous actors, cricketers, and influencers. I played at my own risk during my off-duty hours. I did not play the game in the presence of my superiors while on duty. I have the right to engage in gaming activities, which I did during my off-duty hours.”
