JEE toppers prefer IIT Bombay as their top choice; attracts all top 10 students
72 of the top 100 JEE (Advanced) rank holders have selected IIT Bombay as their campus of choice above all others.
IIT Bombay has emerged as the preferred institution for JEE toppers. All of the top 10 all-India rankers in the JEE are poised to join the Powai campus. Furthermore, 24 out of the top 25 and 47 of the top 50 rankers have selected this esteemed institution over other technical colleges as the admission period for 2024-28 approaches its conclusion. And when one looks at the top 100, 72 have opted for IIT-Bombay as their first choice.
The institute has consistently received high rankings in various assessments and is celebrated for its academic rigor, research opportunities, and robust alumni network.
Institute Director Shireesh Kedare conveyed his contentment that IIT Bombay remains the leading choice for a significant number of high achievers in the JEE (Advanced) examination.
“ I am proud that IIT Bombay remains the preferred destination for most of the top rankers in the JEE (Advanced) examination. We welcome the students and congratulate them for having selected the best educational path, suited to their aspirations and goals,” says Shireesh Kedare, director IIT-B.
The selection process has seen a significant decision from female students as well. Among the top 500 girls, 16 have chosen Mumbai, while 29 girls and 217 boys from the top 1000 have selected IIT Bombay as their institution for the next four years.
The interest in computer science at IIT Bombay has surged to an all-time high, achieving a remarkable score of 10.
According to data from the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay, 179 of the top 500 students have decided on IITB. Last year, 69 of the top 100 students gained admission to IITB, with computer science being the favored discipline for 93 of those high achievers at the Powai campus.
This shift in preference is quite noticeable. IIT Kharagpur was once the leading choice among students. However, over time, these preferences have transformed.
In the past, students were drawn to the esteemed alumni of Kharagpur and other IITs and were eager to attend. Nevertheless, this trend has now changed.
A decade ago, securing a place at IIT-Kanpur was a mark of distinction, reserved for the most outstanding students. This perception, however, has shifted over time.
In the JEE-2019, among the top 100 rankers, who are considered the crème de la crème of engineering aspirants across the country, 64 chose IIT-Bombay, while 33 preferred IIT-Delhi.
IIT Madras, which has consistently held the top position in the NIRF engineering rankings, has now emerged as the third most sought-after institution. Nevertheless, it has managed to attract only one student from the top 50 in the years 2020, 2021, 2022, and 2023.
