Jennifer Dulski, ex-employee at Yahoo, Google & Facebook shares experience on how demotion helped her career
At times, pursuing an unconventional career path can lead to remarkable opportunities, according to Jennifer Dulski, who has held significant roles at major companies like Yahoo and Google and Facebook.
For those hesitant about taking a non-traditional route, it might just be the best decision you can make. Jennifer Dulski, the founder and CEO of Rising Team, exemplifies this perfectly. She began her professional journey in 1999 with a marketing position at Yahoo, despite receiving offers from other firms with much higher pay. Her choice was fueled by a genuine interest in technology and business.
“The first came when I chose the job at Yahoo, and the second came during my time at Yahoo. I decided I wanted to transfer into a general management role, and when I made that move, I took a demotion. I knew I wanted to try to run a business, and there was only one role open, which happened to be two levels below the job I had in marketing. We compromised in the middle, so I only took one level of demotion. That was a great move for me — it set my career on a different path. And in around 18 months, they gave me six businesses to run,” says Dulski.
Her journey is marked by a series of unconventional turns.
She dedicated nearly ten years to Yahoo.
This chapter concluded when she chose to leave Yahoo for a startup called Dealmap. Eventually, Google acquired Dealmap, and Dulski remained involved with the company.
Many were taken aback by her choice to transition to a startup after her extensive tenure at Yahoo. However, she was clear about her ambitions.
Following that, she took on the role of president and CEO at Change.org, a petition platform, after spending several years overseeing various groups and communities at Facebook.
After 25 years in leadership roles at Yahoo, Google, and Facebook, Dulski started her own company, Rising Team.
“I’ve taken what I consider the unexpected or less obvious career option at many points along the road. In 2020 I started my own company, which feels like the culmination of my career,” she adds.
In summary, she brings nearly 25 years of experience in significant leadership positions at major companies like Google, Yahoo, and Facebook.
