A 27-year-old employee of a jewellery showroom in Pimple Gurav, Pune, allegedly fled with 1,865 grams of gold and cash collectively worth Rs 1.37 crore, between November 3 and 8. The theft occurred when the owner was on a pilgrimage, leaving the suspect in charge of the showroom. The owner’s brother-in-law lodged a complaint with the Sangvi police on Saturday.

According to the police, the suspect had been managing the Pimple Gurav showroom for five years and was considered a trusted employee. The owner runs three showrooms in the Pimpri Chinchwad area, and the suspect would collect the keys of the Pimple Gurav showroom from the Nigdi showroom daily. However, on November 7, the suspect informed the Nigdi showroom manager that he would be late to collect the keys the next day.

The police investigation revealed that the suspect never returned to collect the keys on November 8. When the Nigdi showroom manager tried contacting him, his cell phone was switched off. Suspicious, the manager sent an employee to the Pimple Gurav showroom with the keys, only to discover that the display cases were empty, and the safe had been cleaned out.

The stolen items include 1,865 grams of gold jewellery worth Rs 1.33 crore and Rs 3.50 lakh in cash. The police have formed a team to track down the suspect, who hails from Rajasthan. “We are working on some clues and will soon arrest the man,” said the police.

The Sangvi police are investigating the case. The incident highlights the importance of verifying employee backgrounds and implementing robust security measures to prevent such thefts in the future.
