The Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) is open to expanding its curriculum to include studies on influential thinkers and leaders from different Indian states if respective state governments are willing to fund these research efforts, stated Vice-Chancellor Santishree Dhulipudi Pandit on Friday, October 18, 2024.

Pandit’s statement follows recent news about JNU’s plan to establish a ‘Centre of Excellence’ named after Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. This center aims to explore Shivaji’s contributions to Indian strategic thought, including his ideas of a unified India (“Akhand Bharat”) and his efforts for “Hindavi Swaraj.” Supported by the Maharashtra government, the Shivaji Maharaj Centre for Security & Strategic Studies at JNU’s School of International Studies will focus on topics such as Maratha military history, Shivaji’s naval strategies, and guerrilla warfare tactics.

Pandit explained, “The idea to create this center came from my interest in promoting Indian perspectives in academic studies. As a student at JNU, I always wondered why we weren’t studying more about Indian thinkers and narratives.” She added that archives hold valuable material on Shivaji’s recognized strategies, and the goal is to highlight these Indian contributions in academia.

Pandit further stated that if state governments, such as those of Tamil Nadu or Odisha, are willing to fund research, JNU would gladly introduce studies on regional histories, like the Chola Empire’s trade across Southeast Asia or the Kalinga dynasty’s contributions. She emphasized that JNU, as a leading national institution, aims to improve the humanities and social sciences by promoting holistic development and supporting studies on Indian historical perspectives.
