Khadakwasla-Phursungi Water Tunnel Project To Boost City’s Water Supply
The Khadakwasla-Phursungi water tunnel project, aimed at saving 2.7 TMC of water annually, is set to begin soon. The state irrigation department has appointed an agency to execute the project, which involves constructing a 28km tunnel at a cost of approximately Rs 1,600 crore.
The existing Mutha canal, which carries water to rural areas, has been plagued by water losses due to its poor condition. The tunnel will replace the canal, preventing leakage, water pollution, and evaporation losses. The project will also eliminate the need for water pumps, as the tunnel will be designed to flow by gravity.
The project has been in the works for several years, with the state government giving the final go-ahead before the model code of conduct was imposed for the recent assembly elections. While the groundwork for the project is expected to begin within the next two months, the state government is yet to finalize a plan for the utilization of the canal land that will be freed following the construction of the tunnel.
