Kiran Rao’s Laapataa Ladies Chosen as India’s Official Entry for Oscars
The Film Federation of India has selected *Laapataa Ladies*, directed by Kiran Rao, as India’s official entry for the 2024 Oscars in the Best Foreign Picture category. The film, a light-hearted satire featuring both new talents like Nitanshi Goel, Pratibha Ranta, Sparsh Shrivastava, and well-known actors like Chhaya Kadam and Ravi Kishan, will represent India on the global stage.
The selection committee chose *Laapataa Ladies* from a list of 29 films, including major contenders like *Animal*, National Award-winning Malayalam film *Aattam*, and Cannes winner *All We Imagine As Light*.
In a statement, the Film Federation of India highlighted that the film portrays the complex and diverse nature of Indian women, balancing traditional roles and modern aspirations. “The characters in *Laapataa Ladies* showcase women who can embrace being homemakers while also pursuing entrepreneurial dreams, all with a light, humorous touch,” the statement read.
Reacting to the news, Kiran Rao expressed her excitement, saying, “I am deeply honored and thrilled that *Laapataa Ladies* has been selected as India’s official entry for the Oscars.
