Maharashtra Government Approves Renaming of Pune Airport to Honor Sant Tukaram Maharaj
The Maharashtra government has approved a proposal to rename Pune International Airport as “Jagadguru Sant Tukaram Maharaj Airport.” The decision was made during a cabinet meeting, and the proposal will now be forwarded to the central government for further approval.
Murlidhar Mohol, Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation, had recently presented the idea to Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, and Ajit Pawar. Taking to social media, Mohol expressed his gratitude to the government, stating, “Thank you, Mahayuti government! The first step towards renaming Pune Airport after Jagadguru Sant Tukaram Maharaj has been taken today. The proposal I submitted has been approved in the cabinet meeting and will now be sent to the Centre.”
Mohol explained that the significance of Sant Tukaram to the region is profound, as he was born and spent his early years in Lohegaon, where the airport is situated. “Sant Tukaram played a vital role in promoting Bhagwat Dharma and inspiring societal change, which resonates even today. Naming the airport in his honor reflects a widely shared sentiment across Maharashtra,” said the Pune MP.
The state government will now send the approved proposal to the central government, with further decisions expected from the central cabinet soon.
Earlier, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari also expressed support for the renaming during a recent event, adding that he would discuss the matter with Prime Minister Narendra Modi to expedite the process.
