Pune: Koregaon Park Mohalla Sudhar Samiti has requested the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) to stop the implementation of the Mula Mutha River revamp and road construction project immediately as it will cause critical damage to the ecology and environment of Pune.

Anil Latey, Chairman, Koregaon Park Mohalla Sudhar Samiti said, “PMC should stop the riverfront development work immediately. They are harming the city to a great level by taking up work which is destroying the river. “

Speaking to Pune Pulse, Gautam Idnani, Secretary, Koregaon Park Mohalla Sudhar Samiti said, “Several trees near Mula Mutha river have already been chopped off by the PMC. The PMC does not have enough funds to spend on real issues bothering Pune citizens like road repair and many more, however, they have enough money to do beautification projects by destroying ecology & environment. Natural banks, which are the domain of the city, should be respected.”

As per information, the ongoing Mula Mutha Riverfront project has already uprooted, cut and destroyed rich riparian vegetation. PMC has further planned for cutting down huge numbers of riparian trees, which are important for the sustenance of the river ecosystem.

Hence, Koregaon Park Mohalla Sudhar Samiti demands the following:

  • · Cleaning the rivers is a top priority. Reuse and recycle water before releasing it into the rivers.
  • · Ensuring clean water flow downstream of Pune city.
  • · Incorporate protection and conservation of natural springs and their spring shed to increase base flows. No alteration should be affected in the cross-section of the river bed.
  • · Ensuring socio-ecological restoration pathways for riparian habitats and aquatic biodiversity.
  • · Study and revise flood lines, flood zones, the current state of dams and free catchment
  • · Areas as per increased rainfall and new structures built in the river bed. Respecting the domain of the river, conservation and improvement in the natural tree line, and forest.
  • · Ensuring and executing vigilant monitoring for stopping solid and C and D waste.
