Pune: Residents of Koregaon Park are worried as construction debris is being thrown into Bhairoba Nala.

Speaking to Pune Pulse, a resident of Koregaon Park, requesting anonymity, said, “Construction debris is getting thrown into Bhairoba Nala. I don’t know who is throwing it but the point is very clear that the construction debris shouldn’t be thrown into a water body. This is a nala that connects further to the Mula-Mutha River. In every rainy season, this nala gets flooded as it is getting narrower due to slum encroachments on both sides. Also, somebody, later on, will get a contract to remove the debris from the nala/water body. Even if someone gets permission to dump something in a nala, it is not at all correct as debris or anything else cannot block the water flow of a water body.”

Abhijeet Gaikwad, a resident of Koregaon Park said, “Construction debris is being thrown into the Nala most probably due to road work going on nearby. This is absolutely wrong. I had approached the PMC regarding this for which they told me that they have told the wrongdoers not to throw anything in the nala. However, such things must not happen anywhere.”

Rohan Desai, another resident of Koregaon Park said, “This nala has a natural water flow. However, someone does something artificially, in the name of development, which ultimately could lead to floods. Hence, throwing anything into a nala or a water body is completely wrong. Not only in this case but also, several people dump waste in the nala mostly from areas like Ghorpadi, etc. An active citizen from our area had stopped this but, unfortunately, to no use. So, this is a serious issue.”

Megha Lavand, Junior Engineer, PMC Road Department said, “The debris was thrown yesterday. We don’t have anything to do with this, however, we have told the people responsible behind this to stop throwing debris in the Nala & have told them to remove it immediately.”
