The world’s interest in Lakshadweep has surged to its highest level in two decades due to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the pristine archipelago, which also sparked a controversy surrounding tourism in the Maldives.

As per further information from the X handle of MyGovIndia “PM Narendra Modi’s visit to Lakshadweep caused a significant surge in online searches about the islands. This worldwide search interest is currently at its highest in the last 20 years, indicating a renewed fascination with its natural beauty and cultural richness.”

A quick Google search conducted within the 20-year window (2004-present), which is the longest period of time it will allow without requiring customization, yields a flat line with a sharp increase in 2024.  The same results are returned globally, with 2024 showing the highest peak, not just in India.

PM Modi spent January 2–3 in the Lakshadweep Islands. In addition, he laid the cornerstone for the renovation of the primary healthcare facility and five model Anganwadi centers in the area, as well as the Kochi-Lakshadweep Islands Submarine Optical Fibre Connection.

Interest in the union territory peaked on Friday after the images went viral on social media, with over 50,000 people searching for Lakshadweep on Google.
