Passenger insists on Marathi; debate over language respect vs personal freedom divides social media
Mumbai: A heated argument between a passenger and a woman staff member at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport has gone viral, sparking a fresh debate over language use in Maharashtra.
The incident, captured on video, shows the passenger repeatedly asking the staff member why she was not speaking in Marathi. He argued that since the airport is located in Maharashtra, staff should communicate in the local language. The woman, however, refused and continued speaking in Hindi.
As the exchange escalated, other airport staff stepped in and urged the passenger to calm down. Despite their intervention, the man continued to insist that those unwilling to speak Marathi should not work in the state. The staff member stood her ground and declined to switch languages.
The video, widely shared on social media, has triggered mixed reactions. While some users supported the importance of respecting and learning the local language, others criticised the passenger, saying language should not be forced and individuals have the freedom to speak in any language.
The incident has once again highlighted the ongoing debate between promoting regional identity and respecting individual choice in a diverse country like India.
