LIC Office in Mumbai Faces Backlash Over Marathi Language Exclusion
Mumbai is witnessing yet another controversy over the sidelining of the Marathi language, this time involving the Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC). Reports indicate that forms available at LIC’s Kandivali East office were printed in English and Gujarati but lacked a Marathi option.
This has led to outrage among Marathi-speaking citizens, who argue that LIC, being a government-run institution, should prioritize the regional language, especially in Maharashtra’s capital.
In response, Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) workers staged a protest at the LIC office under the leadership of party spokesperson Hemchandra Kamble. They confronted officials, demanding an explanation for the omission of Marathi. MNS has warned that protests will continue until LIC’s divisional manager issues an apology to Maharashtra.
During the demonstration, MNS workers raised slogans against LIC, asserting that the exclusion of Marathi in Mumbai is unacceptable.
This incident follows a recent controversy at an Airtel gallery in the city, where an employee allegedly refused to speak in Marathi and made remarks that angered locals. The employee was later terminated following MNS protests, and Airtel issued a written apology.
The repeated sidelining of Marathi in Maharashtra’s capital has sparked widespread discontent, with many questioning why the regional language is being ignored in official communications.
