Pune: Excessive noise levels can be detrimental to human health, with harmful effects occurring when they surpass 75 decibels (dB) and become painful above 120 dB.

It is therefore recommended that noise levels be kept below 65 dB during the day, and it is indicated that restful sleep is impossible with nighttime ambient noise levels exceeding 30 dB.

Noise pollution can be caused by various sources, such as drivers honking their horns, groups of workers drilling the road surface, and aircraft flying overhead. As a result, residents of Lohegaon have been consistently raising concerns over the noise pollution in the area.

Lohegaon resident Sameer Mehar has been facing noise pollution for a prolonged period of time. The primary source of noise pollution in their area, Porwal Road, is the modified silencer noise from bullet bikes. This nuisance is observed almost every day, particularly at night, due to the nearby college, DY Patil. The sound from the modified silencer is so loud that it is unbearable for residents. Despite filing multiple complaints with the police, the resolution provided is only temporary and not permanent. It is recommended that 24×7 police patrolling be implemented in the area to resolve these problems.’

Another Lohegaon resident, Rahul Kumar, has also faced problems during the Ganesh Festival, where songs were played at high volumes, causing distress to residents. Noise pollution can lead to various health problems, such as high blood pressure and stress.

Speaking to Pune Pulse, Mahesh Shindikar, Assistant Professor of Biology, COEP, added, ”Noise pollution causes various problems like stress, sleep disruption, high blood pressure, hypertension, hearing loss, lack of attention, etc. Citizens should take care of themselves. Maximum trees should be planted, as they act as barriers to noise pollution. Heavy fines should be imposed on people who are seen driving vehicles and making loud sounds.”
