Lonavala to Phuket: Indians Turn Raksha Bandhan Weekend into a Five-Day Getaway, Boosting Travel Demand
As Raksha Bandhan holidays converge, Indians are turning the upcoming long weekend into a perfect five-day escape, driving up travel demand significantly. Domestic air traffic is anticipated to surpass previous records, with experts predicting a surge that could exceed the 4.71 lakh passenger mark, previously reached on April 22, 2024.
A Surge in Travel Bookings
From leisurely drives to Lonavala to international flights to Phuket, Indian travelers are making the most of this extended weekend. Over 15,000 air bookings have already been made for the period between August 15 and 20, marking a substantial 37% increase compared to a regular weekend, according to data from Cleartrip.
A flight Booking Company , noted that the alignment of Independence Day and Raksha Bandhan has sparked a wave of enthusiasm among travelers. “Our flight searches doubled compared to last year’s Independence Day. The top destinations include Delhi, Bengaluru, Mumbai, Coorg, and Goa, with average airfares ranging from ₹8,000 to ₹10,000,” comapny said.
Rising Popularity of International and Domestic Destinations
The popularity of international destinations like Bali, Thailand, Kuwait, and Singapore has surged, with a 60-70% year-on-year increase in bookings. Emerging hotspots like Azerbaijan, Georgia, and Vietnam are also gaining traction among Indian travelers.
Domestic destinations aren’t lagging either. Short-haul trips to scenic spots like Lonavala, Ooty, and Mahabaleshwar, along with spiritual destinations such as Varanasi and Amritsar, are seeing significant growth in searches and bookings. This trend reflects a broader shift towards quick getaways as travelers seek to make the most of their time off.
Airports Gear Up for Record Traffic
With domestic airlines offering substantial discounts, including the steepest price cuts by IndiGo in the past year, air passenger traffic is expected to peak around August 14 and 19. The Ministry of Civil Aviation has issued warnings to airports to brace for a surge in traffic, driven by the combination of holiday travel and potential weather delays.
Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) has already advised passengers to plan ahead due to heightened security measures for Independence Day. Meanwhile, IndiGo anticipates operating at a 92-95% passenger load factor during the period, with a notable increase in bookings across both metro routes and Tier II and III cities.
Metro and Leisure Destinations Take the Lead
Bustling metro cities like Bengaluru, Mumbai, and Delhi remain top choices for travelers, whether for leisure or to combine work and vacation. Meanwhile, leisure destinations within driving distance, such as Lonavala and Mahabaleshwar, are proving popular for quick escapes.
Spiritual travel is also on the rise, with destinations like Varanasi and Amritsar experiencing a significant uptick in bookings. According to Ixigo, Varanasi saw an 84% year-on-year increase in flight bookings, while Amritsar saw an 81% rise.
Airfares on the Rise
The surge in demand has naturally led to an increase in airfares. Routes like Mumbai to Goa have seen a 51% spike in prices, while Bengaluru to Kochi and Delhi to Goa have experienced 46% and 37% increases, respectively. As a result, many travelers are booking well in advance to avoid last-minute price hikes.
The travel trend for the August 15 weekend suggests that Indians are meticulously planning their vacations, with a significant peak in searches occurring as early as July. This trend is further supported by the increasing popularity of short domestic and international trips.
High Demand for Accommodations
The surge in travel demand is not limited to flights. Airbnb has reported a staggering 340% increase in domestic searches for the long weekend, highlighting a growing trend among Indians to explore domestic destinations during short breaks.
Many hotels are fully booked for the upcoming weekend, with bookings reaching capacity weeks in advance. “This heightened demand has driven a 15% increase in our average room rates compared to last year’s August 15 holiday,”
Conclusion
As Indians embrace the extended Independence Day and Raksha Bandhan weekend, the travel industry is witnessing a significant boost in demand. Whether for quick domestic getaways or international escapes, the surge in bookings and the rise in airfares underscore the growing enthusiasm for travel among Indian consumers.
