In a recent breakthrough, the local crime branch unit of the Pune rural police successfully apprehended a notorious gang of thieves preying on tourists in Lonavala. The police action came in response to numerous complaints of thefts from both locals and visitors in the picturesque hill station.

Under the guidance of Deputy Superintendent of Police, Satya Sai Kartik, Police Inspector Avinash Shilimkar and his dedicated team launched a thorough investigation into the series of robberies. Their strategy involved meticulous scrutiny of the criminals’ methods, timing, and locations.

After relentless vigilance, invaluable tips from confidential informants, and careful analysis of gathered data, the police were able to apprehend the thieves responsible for a string of crimes. The three arrested individuals were identified as Wasim Salauddin Chaudhary (27), a resident of Varsoli Lonavala, and his accomplices Salim Salauddin Chaudhary (21) and Shahrukh Babu Shaikh (21), both residents of Lonavala.

During the arrests, the police recovered stolen items, including a gold chain, two diamond rings, a gold ring, and two motorcycles with a total value of Rs 2.26 lakh. Wasim Chaudhary, the ringleader, was remanded in police custody, while the other two were granted bail. Remarkably, Wasim had already faced charges in eight burglary and theft cases. With the addition of two more cases unearthed during the investigation, his criminal record now stands at a total of 10 charges.

“The police have successfully solved all 10 cases registered this year. These cases ranged from house break-ins and burglaries to simple thefts.

Wasim Chaudhary, the main accused, is a history-sheeter and a habitual offender. Wasim and his gang primarily targeted tourists in Lonavala and the surrounding regions. Tourists staying in hotels and lodges often refrain from lodging complaints or pursuing follow-ups due to their short stays.

Visitors to Lonavala are advised to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to safeguard their belongings while enjoying the beauty of this popular tourist destination.
