Pune, November 23, 2024 – The much-anticipated counting of votes for the 21 Assembly constituencies in Pune district began at 8 AM today. Both the ruling Mahayuti coalition and the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) alliance are vying for dominance, with Pune serving as a key battleground in the state’s political landscape.

The district, home to constituencies like Baramati, Indapur, Maval, Kasba Peth, and Kothrud, has seen intense competition, particularly between the two factions of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), led by Sharad Pawar and Ajit Pawar.

In the current Assembly, the BJP holds the largest share in Pune with nine MLAs, followed by NCP (Ajit Pawar) with eight. The Congress and Shiv Sena (UBT) hold minor stakes. This election saw the BJP contest eight seats, NCP (Ajit Pawar) on 13, Congress on five, and Shiv Sena (UBT) on one.

Security and Counting Procedures

Vote counting will start with postal ballots, which include votes from over 25,000 policemen, senior citizens, and service voters. Once counted, the Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) stored under tight security in strong rooms will be unsealed for the next stage of counting.

The Pune elections are critical not just for their local impact but also for their potential to shape the balance of power in the 288-member Maharashtra Assembly. With results expected by the evening, the day promises high-stakes drama for all stakeholders.
