Maharashtra: Chandrapur Hottest in India at 44.6°C, 4th Hottest Worldwide; Heatwave Alert Issued for Vidarbha
An intense heatwave continues to grip Maharashtra’s Vidarbha region, with Chandrapur recording a scorching 44.6°C on Sunday — the highest temperature in India and the fourth hottest globally, according to a private weather agency.
Just a day before, Nagpur had topped the national chart with 44.7°C. On Sunday, six of India’s hottest cities were in Vidarbha, highlighting the region’s alarming heat conditions. Amravati and Brahmapuri reached 44.4°C, ranking among the top 10 globally. Akola followed at 44.3°C, while Nagpur recorded 44°C, ranking 14th in the world.
Chandrapur, known for its wildlife and thermal power stations, has frequently seen extreme April temperatures ranging from 42.5°C to 44.6°C. The district’s all-time April record is 47.2°C, set on April 29, 2019.
Except for Buldhana, all Vidarbha districts saw temperatures above 41°C, exceeding normal levels by 1.4°C to 3.7°C. With Sunday being a public holiday, many residents remained indoors to escape the brutal heat.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a heatwave alert for the region. Temperatures are expected to reach 45°C in Nagpur and Akola on Monday and Tuesday. Wardha, Chandrapur, and Yavatmal may also experience heatwave conditions in the coming days. While isolated rain or thunderstorms are possible, no major relief is expected soon.
