Final Stretch of Mumbai-Nagpur Expressway Likely to Be Inaugurated by PM Modi in May; Travel Time Cut to 8 Hours
Maharashtra is set to complete its flagship infrastructure project—the Mumbai-Nagpur Samruddhi Expressway—with the inauguration of the final 76-kilometer stretch between Bhiwandi and Igatpuri expected in early May. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to inaugurate the segment on either May 1, Maharashtra Day, or May 2, officially opening the entire 701-kilometer expressway linking Mumbai with Nagpur.
This last portion of the route presented significant engineering challenges, running through the rugged Sahyadri ranges. Construction required relocating 62 low-tension power lines, rerouting six major cables, and working in close coordination with railway infrastructure to ensure seamless integration.

Once fully operational, the expressway will reduce the Mumbai-Nagpur travel time from 16–17 hours to just 8 hours, thanks to design speeds of 100–120 kmph. The Mumbai-Nashik leg alone will see a time saving of up to an hour.

To enhance road safety, authorities have set up strict vehicle checks at the entry point near Mumbai, including tyre and air pressure inspections and breathalyser tests.
Emergency response is also a priority, with dedicated helplines—1800 233 2233, 8181818155, and 108—for ambulance and roadside assistance.
Stretching across 26 talukas, 392 villages, and 10 districts, the expressway is also expected to improve connectivity for 14 additional districts. Beyond faster travel, the project promises to boost regional development, spur economic growth, and significantly improve the state’s transport infrastructure.
With the final link soon to be operational, Maharashtra enters a new era of fast, safe, and efficient highway connectivity.
