Maharashtra Deputy CM Ajit Pawar Advises Against Undercooked Chicken Amid GBS Scare
Pune: Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar urged residents to avoid undercooked chicken following a Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS) outbreak. Speaking in Pune, which has reported the highest number of cases, Pawar clarified that there is no need for poultry culling despite concerns linking the outbreak to chicken consumption.
No Poultry Culling Needed
Pawar addressed speculation about the cause of the outbreak, stating, “After a detailed review, it was concluded that culling poultry is unnecessary. However, people should ensure their food, especially chicken, is well-cooked.”
Doctors Recommend Thorough Cooking
Medical experts highlight that GBS, a nerve disorder, can be triggered by infections from contaminated food or water, particularly those containing Campylobacter jejuni bacteria. Pawar assured the public that the situation is under control.
GBS Cases Rise to 208
According to health officials, one new case was reported on Saturday, raising the total suspected and confirmed GBS cases in Maharashtra to 208. GBS is a rare condition where the immune system attacks peripheral nerves, causing muscle weakness, numbness, and difficulty swallowing or breathing. The syndrome often follows bacterial or viral infections, such as food poisoning or respiratory illnesses.
