Maharashtra FDA Suspends Zepto’s Food License Over Hygiene Violations

Mumbai, June 3, 2025 — The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has suspended the food business license of Zepto’s parent company, Kiranakart Technologies Pvt Ltd, following serious hygiene lapses at its dark store in Dharavi, Mumbai.

According to the FDA’s inspection report, food items at the facility were found to be contaminated with fungus and stored around stagnant water. Additionally, the agency flagged the improper separation of expired products from fresh stock, and failure to maintain proper cold storage temperatures as per regulatory norms.

“These findings constitute a failure to comply with the conditions of the license,” the FDA stated, adding that the suspension will remain in force until full compliance is demonstrated by the company.

In response, a Zepto spokesperson said, “Maintaining the highest standards of food safety and hygiene is non-negotiable for us. We have initiated an internal review and are working closely with the authorities to ensure swift corrective action.”

The development marks another setback for the quick-commerce startup, which recently shut down Zepto Cafe operations in 44 locations and has been facing delivery partner strikes in Hyderabad. These challenges come at a critical time as Zepto prepares for a potential public listing and seeks to attract domestic investors.

The company said it remains committed to addressing the issues and resuming operations in full compliance with regulatory standards.
