Government Medical Colleges (GMC) have announced a significant increase in the stipend for medical intern doctors, raising it from Rs. 11,001 to Rs. 18,000.

This move comes after persistent complaints from the Association of State Medical Interns (ASMI) regarding the inadequate payment compared to the escalating MBBS fees and lower stipends in comparison to other states.

Moreover, foreign medical graduates (FMGs) who have completed their education abroad and interned in Maharashtra are also eligible for the enhanced stipend. ASMI has long advocated for higher compensation, with Dr. Atharva Shinde, President of ASMI Maharashtra, highlighting the demand for a monthly stipend of Rs. 30,000, a figure comparable to states like Assam and Karnataka.

While the Directorate of Medical Education and Research (DMER) initially proposed a stipend increase to Rs. 22,000, the final decision settled at Rs. 18,000 per month. Despite aspirations for more, many interns, nearing completion of their internships, express acceptance of the raise, emphasizing the relief that Maharashtra is no longer the lowest paying state for intern doctors in GMCs.
