To reduce the health threats posed by extreme heat, the Maharashtra health department has instructed district-level health officials to educate workers about identifying factors that could increase the risk of heat-related illnesses. This move comes amidst rising concerns about heat-related ailments during the summer months.

The latest advisories from the Maharashtra Health Department are urging citizens to be watchful for symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Dr. Radhakrishna Pawar, who is the joint director of Health (Maharashtra), has emphasized the significance of closely monitoring vulnerable groups like children and the elderly, who are more susceptible to heat-related illnesses.

The guidelines recommend simple measures such as staying hydrated, wearing loose-fitting cotton clothes, and avoiding prolonged outdoor activities, especially during peak heat hours. When traveling, it is recommended to carry water, use oral rehydration solutions, and consume homemade drinks like lemon water and buttermilk to avoid dehydration.

Last year, Maharashtra witnessed a concerning rise in heat-related illnesses, with Pune and Raigad reporting the highest number of cases. Data from the state health department revealed that between March and July 2023, 3,191 people suffered from heat-related illnesses, resulting in 22 confirmed deaths due to heat stroke.

Despite the alarming figures, there’s been a slight decrease in heat-related cases reported in March 2024 compared to the previous year. Thirteen cases of heat stroke were reported, with no fatalities recorded as of March 20. However, health authorities remain vigilant and urge continued adherence to preventive measures to mitigate the risks associated with extreme heat.
