Farmers in Maharashtra’s Marathwada and Vidarbha regions are selling their Kharif crops, including soybean, moong, and urad, at significantly lower prices than the government’s guaranteed rates. Despite promises of assured purchase through various schemes, the government has yet to initiate procurement.

The central government announced minimum support prices (MSP) for Kharif crops, but the reality differs. Moong is selling at Rs 7500 per quintal, compared to the MSP of Rs 8682. Urad is selling at Rs 7000, short of the MSP of Rs 7400. Soybean prices have also dropped to Rs 4400, below the MSP of Rs 4892.

This disparity has resulted in farmers earning an average of Rs 500 less per quintal than the guaranteed price. Ajit Navale, General Secretary of Akhil Bharatiya Kisan Sabha, has urged the government to begin purchasing crops at the guaranteed prices.

Navale warned that failure to do so will have consequences for the ruling parties in the upcoming assembly elections. “The government should start buying agricultural produce as per the guaranteed price,” he stated.

The Minimum Support Price (MSP) is a government-set price to protect farmers from market fluctuations. However, the current price gap highlights the need for effective implementation of these support systems.

As harvesting continues, farmers await government action to bridge this price gap and ensure fair compensation for their produce. The government’s response will be crucial in addressing the concerns of Maharashtra’s farming community.
