Advanced System to Prevent Violations and Issue Challans Post-Trial

Motorists on the Atal Setu should be cautious, as the Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS) is set to monitor and penalize traffic rule violations. According to the transport department, ITMS trials are scheduled to begin next week and once completed, the system will play a crucial role in enhancing road safety and enforcing traffic discipline.

The ITMS will oversee up to 17 types of violations, including lane-cutting, over-speeding and driving without a seatbelt. Currently, there is no control over over-speeding, which has led to accidents, said a transport official. The new system aims to reduce these incidents by enforcing stricter traffic regulations and increasing public safety.

The 21.8-km Atal Setu, inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has already been equipped with 374 CCTV cameras, featuring an ‘incident detection’ system capable of measuring vehicle speeds. These cameras, using advanced AI technology, will help detect and record traffic violations.

Previously, the system had not been fully tested by the transport department and no citations were issued for violations captured by these cameras. However, the ITMS was already being used to issue challans to vehicles without valid FAST tags. After the trials are completed, real-time challans will be issued to any driver breaking the rules, according to transport officials.

This initiative is expected to promote traffic discipline, reduce accidents, and generate revenue from penalties for rule violations.
