The Maharashtra government’s ambitious Ladki Bahin Yojana, which currently provides ₹1,500 per month to eligible women, could soon offer an additional boost—bank loans of up to ₹40,000 to help women start small businesses, Deputy Chief Minister and Finance Minister Ajit Pawar announced on Sunday.

Under the scheme, the state spends nearly ₹45,000 crore annually to support women across Maharashtra. Speaking on the expansion of the initiative, Pawar stated that the government is actively working on a proposal to facilitate business loans for women, especially those who wish to become self-reliant but lack startup capital.

Pawar explained that banks will issue loans of up to ₹40,000 to Ladki Bahin beneficiaries for setting up micro-enterprises, and in a significant move, the monthly EMI (loan installment) may be covered by the government under the Ladki Bahin scheme itself. Discussions with cooperative and regional banks, particularly in Nanded district, are underway, he said.

He also reassured beneficiaries that the scheme will not be discontinued, urging them not to fall for rumors spread by political opponents. “Even if there’s a slight delay in disbursements, the support continues without fail,” he said.

Highlighting the broader vision, Pawar added, “If a woman gets ₹50,000 in capital, she can start her own business and become financially independent. This would help uplift not just individuals, but entire families.”

In addition to this, Pawar also touched upon efforts to reduce the state’s electricity subsidy burden of ₹20,000 crore per month—particularly in the agriculture sector. He noted that solar panel installations for daytime power supply to farmers are in the final stage of implementation.
