Maharashtra Rain Alert: IMD Issues Heavy Rainfall Warning for August 30-31
Maharashtra Weather Forecast for January 21: Changing Weather Patterns, Cold Conditions Continue; Rain Alert Issued
Maharashtra Rain Update | IMD Alert | Heavy Rainfall in Konkan, Marathwada, Vidarbha
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a fresh warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall across Maharashtra on August 30 and 31, 2025. The continuous downpour over the past few days has already disrupted normal life and caused severe damage to crops, especially in Marathwada and Vidarbha.
Crop Loss and Flooding in Marathwada & Vidarbha
In Marathwada, heavy rains have destroyed thousands of hectares of farmland. Standing crops of cotton, soybean, tur, vegetables, and even orchards have been submerged. Reports confirm that in western Vidarbha alone, around 6.08 lakh hectares of crops have been affected, with nearly 4.58 lakh hectares damaged in August itself.
The Amravati, Yavatmal, Wardha, Akola, Washim, and Buldhana districts have reported massive agricultural losses. According to the Agriculture Department, the government has sought ₹88.23 crore in compensation under NDRF norms.
Dam Reservoirs at Dangerous Levels
In western Vidarbha, the Upper Wardha Dam has reached 92% capacity, forcing authorities to open 9 out of 13 gates to release excess water into the Wardha river. Similarly, in Jalgaon’s Chalisgaon taluka, the Girna Dam is at 90% capacity, while seven other medium projects, including Manyad, Valthan, and Kodgaon, are filled to 100%.
Cities on High Alert
- Mumbai witnessed continuous rainfall since late Friday night with intermittent heavy showers on Saturday morning.
- Nanded has been experiencing torrential rains, cutting off connectivity to several villages.
- Pune, Konkan, Marathwada, and Vidarbha have been placed under orange alert, with the IMD warning of extremely heavy rainfall in isolated areas.
Farmers Face Repeated Losses
This year has been particularly harsh for farmers. In June’s floods, 1,08,913 farmers lost crops spread across 98,209 hectares. With the August spell adding to the damage, the crisis has deepened, worsening rural distress.
IMD Weather Forecast: August 30-31
- Konkan & Goa: Heavy to very heavy rainfall expected.
- Marathwada & Vidarbha: Orange alert issued; possibility of flash floods.
- Mumbai & Pune: Intermittent heavy showers.
- Nanded, Amravati, Yavatmal, Wardha, Chandrapur: High flood risk due to dam discharge.
