Maharashtra: Record Power Demand In Winter; MSEDCL Supplies 25,808 MW Without Additional Purchases
Mumbai, January 15, 2025: Despite typically lower electricity demand during winter, Maharashtra recorded a historic peak demand of 25,808 MW on Saturday, January 11. Mahavitaran met this record demand without any additional power purchases, thanks to prior planning, stated Mahavitaran Chairman and Managing Director Lokesh Chandra.
Under the guidance of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Mahavitaran prepared a detailed supply plan to cater to the growing power requirements, ensuring uninterrupted supply during the peak demand period.
Mahavitaran, responsible for power supply across the state except for parts of Mumbai, recorded its highest-ever demand on January 11, surpassing the previous peaks of 25,410 MW on February 7, 2024, and 25,144 MW on April 14, 2022. Officials attribute the increased demand to higher agricultural pump usage due to a good monsoon season.
To handle such demand, Mahavitaran had already secured power purchase agreements. On Saturday, power was sourced from multiple channels, including:
- 6,996 MW from Mahagenco
- 5,252 MW from central projects
- 5,733 MW from private producers
- 2,009 MW from hydropower projects
- 3,093 MW from solar energy projects
- 228 MW from wind energy projects
- 2,498 MW from co-generation plants
Mahavitaran is now gearing up for the upcoming summer, anticipating a further rise in demand. Preparations are underway to ensure uninterrupted power supply during the season.
