Maharashtra is witnessing an unusual surge in temperatures this October, with several regions, including Pune, experiencing significantly hotter days and nights. The heatwave arrived earlier than expected, signaling a sharp deviation from typical post-monsoon conditions.

On Thursday, Alibaug topped the temperature charts in the state, recording a sweltering 38.9°C, which is 7.4°C higher than the average for this time of year. Akola also experienced an abnormal spike in its minimum temperature, reaching 26.5°C, 3.8°C above normal. Weather experts from the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) have indicated that such elevated temperatures are more characteristic of post-monsoon heatwaves, which usually occur later in October.

Pune, too, recorded its hottest October morning in over a decade on Thursday. Shivajinagar reported a minimum temperature of 23.2°C, surpassing the previous high of 23.1°C from 2017. In Hadapsar and Wadgaon Sheri, minimum temperatures exceeded 25°C, with high humidity levels contributing to the discomfort.

Earlier this week, Shivajinagar registered a daytime high of 34.9°C on Tuesday, more than 4°C above normal, making it the hottest October day there in six years. While brief rain showers on Wednesday brought temporary relief, the respite was short-lived, and temperatures remained warm, particularly during the night between Wednesday and Thursday. IMD scientist S.D. Sanap noted that the rain marginally lowered daytime temperatures, but nighttime heat persisted.

The unseasonal October heatwave is causing concern among weather experts, who continue to monitor the situation closely.
