Satara, October 24, 2025: A shocking case from Maharashtra’s Satara district has sparked political outrage after a woman doctor died by suicide, leaving behind a note on her hand accusing a police sub-inspector of repeatedly raping and harassing her over several months.

The deceased, who worked as a medical officer at the Phaltan Sub-District Hospital, was found dead on Thursday night. On her left palm, she had written that Sub-Inspector (SI) Gopal Badne had raped her four times and subjected her to physical and mental abuse. Following the revelation, Badne has been suspended, sources confirmed.

In her note, the doctor reportedly wrote, “Police inspector Gopal Badne is the reason I died. He raped me four times. He subjected me to mental and physical torture for more than five months.”

Earlier, on June 19, the woman had submitted a written complaint to the Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) at Phaltan, alleging harassment by Badne and two other officers — Sub-Divisional Police Inspector Patil and Assistant Police Inspector Ladputre. She had urged the authorities to take legal action and mentioned being under “extreme stress.”

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has reportedly ordered Badne’s suspension. The incident has triggered widespread political reactions, with opposition parties blaming the ruling Mahayuti government for ignoring the victim’s earlier complaint.

State Congress leader Vijay Wadettiwar criticized the government, stating, “When the protector becomes the predator, how will justice be served? The government’s failure to act on her earlier complaint reflects its negligence.”

BJP leader and State Women’s President Chitra Wagh termed the incident “unfortunate” and assured a thorough probe. “An FIR is being registered, and a team has been formed to arrest the accused. We appeal to women to come forward and use the 112 helpline for immediate help,” she said.

The Maharashtra State Commission for Women has also intervened, directing the Satara Superintendent of Police to arrest the absconding accused and investigate the alleged inaction on the victim’s earlier complaint. The commission stated that it is essential to determine why the woman’s plea for help went unanswered.

The doctor’s body has been sent for post-mortem, and a detailed investigation is currently underway
