Maharashtra: Schools To Reopen In June, Not April, Clarifies Education Commissioner
Pune: 13 Schools Found Illegal, 24 Not Operating At Approved Locations; Parents Urged To Stay Alert
Pune: Despite recent remarks by Minister of State for School Education Pankaj Bhoyar about efforts to start the academic year from April 1, the Education Commissioner has clarified that schools will continue to reopen in June as per the existing schedule.
Speaking in Pune two days ago, Bhoyar had stated that officials were working towards implementing an April 1 start date, sparking widespread discussions among schools, parents, educational institutions, and teachers. However, due to a lack of detailed clarification, confusion persisted regarding the proposed change.
Addressing the concerns, Education Commissioner Sachindra Pratap Singh confirmed, “There will be no change in the academic calendar for the upcoming year. Schools will commence in June as per the usual schedule. Any revision to the school reopening timeline would require extensive discussions and adequate preparation time. As of now, no changes are planned.”
The debate around shifting Maharashtra’s school calendar to align with the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) schedule has been ongoing. While a state curriculum framework has been developed under the National Education Policy (NEP), including new textbooks modeled on CBSE patterns, there is significant opposition to altering the reopening schedule due to varying regional conditions across Maharashtra.
As of now, no final decision has been made, nor has the education department issued an official government resolution on the matter. Meanwhile, Singh confirmed that the newly developed state curriculum textbooks for Class 1 will be implemented from the upcoming academic year.
