In a major move towards sustainable transportation, the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) has announced a plan to shift its fleet towards eco-friendly hybrid fuel. Beginning from the financial year 2025-26, the corporation will add 20,000 hybrid fuel buses that will run on a combination of diesel and alternative fuels like CNG and LNG.
This decision was taken during a high-level meeting focused on transitioning to cleaner fuel sources. MSRTC plans to induct a total of 25,000 new buses over the next five years, acquiring around 5,000 buses annually. The move comes in light of fluctuating diesel prices and limited long-term availability.
CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) and LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) are not only more economical than diesel but also significantly more environment-friendly. Diesel will be used only in emergencies to ensure uninterrupted public transport services. Compared to diesel, which offers just 4 km per liter, CNG/LNG buses offer improved mileage of 5 to 5.5 km per liter, resulting in fuel efficiency and reduced emissions.
Key highlights of the plan include:
IMG-20250324-WA0012
20% subsidy on LNG fuel.
Annual savings of ₹235 crore on fuel costs.
90 new LNG fuel stations to be built across the state.
20 CNG stations to be set up by Mahanagar Gas Pvt. Ltd.
Bus manufacturers have been invited to submit proposals for hybrid bus models.
This initiative aligns with the state’s broader vision of reducing vehicular pollution and promoting sustainable mobility for public transport users.
