Maharashtra’s Most Famous Hill Station Near Mumbai and Pune to Get Skywalk, Adventure Zones, and a Major Tourism Makeover
Lonavala Set for Tourism Makeover: Maharashtra Govt Launches ₹850-Crore Development Plan
Lonavala: One of Maharashtra’s most popular hill stations, Lonavala, is set for a major transformation as the state government rolls out an ambitious ₹850-crore tourism development project. The initiative aims to enhance the overall tourist experience by upgrading infrastructure, ensuring visitor safety, and introducing new attractions.
The redevelopment plan includes the construction of a glass skywalk connecting the famed Tiger Point and Lion Point, offering panoramic views of the Sahyadri hills. Adventure activities and improved facilities are also on the cards to attract more domestic and international tourists.
Focus on Safety and Infrastructure
In light of recent accidents, especially around Bhushi Dam, the local administration has implemented stricter safety measures. Entry to high-risk areas is now restricted after 6 PM, and lifeguards are being deployed at popular water bodies. Authorities are also planning to restrict access to certain spots during the monsoon season.
To further support tourist safety, Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar recently announced the establishment of dedicated tourist police stations in Lonavala and nearby Karla. These units will assist visitors, maintain order, and ensure the security of both domestic and international tourists.
Tourist Hotspots in Lonavala
Lonavala continues to draw visitors with its diverse attractions:
- Tiger’s Leap (Tiger Point): A scenic cliff offering stunning valley views.
- Bhushi Dam: A monsoon favorite, now under stricter safety protocols.
- Karla and Bhaja Caves: Ancient Buddhist caves showcasing rock-cut architecture.
- Lohagad and Visapur Forts: Popular trekking destinations rich in Maratha history.
- Della Adventure Park: India’s largest adventure park, known for extreme sports.
Boost for Local Economy
With the upcoming infrastructure and safety upgrades, tourism in Lonavala is expected to rise significantly, benefiting the local economy and creating employment opportunities. The project aligns with Maharashtra’s broader goal of promoting sustainable and responsible tourism across the state.
Officials stated that work on the redevelopment project is already underway and will be completed in phases. Tourists can look forward to a safer, cleaner, and more engaging experience in the coming months.
