Mumbai: The long-awaited Mumbai-Goa highway project, officially known as National Highway 66, is set to be completed by June 2025. Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari made the announcement, adding that the new stretch will allow commuters to travel between Mumbai and Goa in just six hours down from the current 10 to 12 hours.
The project, which has been under construction for several years, faced delays due to issues related to land acquisition, legal hurdles, and coordination between departments. However, Minister Gadkari confirmed that these challenges have now been addressed and the construction work is progressing rapidly.
“This highway will transform connectivity in the Konkan region. It will boost tourism and economic development along the route,” said Gadkari during a recent media interaction.
In addition to the improved travel time, the government also plans to introduce a new toll policy that will make highway travel more seamless. Physical toll booths will soon be replaced with a satellite-based toll collection system. This system will track vehicle movements and automatically deduct toll charges from the vehicle owner’s bank account based on the distance travelled. The new policy is expected to be implemented within the next 15 days.
Once complete, the Mumbai-Goa highway will not only be a major boost for regional infrastructure but also a significant relief for regular travelers, tourists, and the local economy along the western coast.
