At least 17 labourers were killed and several more are feared to be trapped after a railway bridge under construction collapsed at Sairang in Mizoram’s Mizoram state on Wednesday morning at around 11 am. The bridge collapsed about 21 km from Mizoram’s state capital.

As per information, about 40 construction workers were on the bridge when it collapsed. Seventeen bodies have been found so far, and many more are still missing. The Young Mizo Association’s branch in Sairang is currently conducting rescue operations. The bridge was part of the Indian Railways’ project to link all state capitals in the northeast region. It had been under construction for several years. The incident occurred around 11 am.

Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has announced Rs 10 lakh compensation for the families of the deceased and Rs 2 lakh for those critically injured.

The bridge was constructed on the banks of the Kurung river. The bridge is situated between the railway stations of Bairabi & Sairang. The pier height of this bridge is 104 meters. The railway station of Sairang will be the last railway station before Mizoram’s capital. Once the project is completed, it will connect the state-level railway network of Mizoram to the state-level rail network of India.
