Minor Gives Birth Alone At Residence; Adult Man Held Under POCSO Act
Pune, February 10, 2026: A 15-year-old girl delivered a baby by herself at her residence in Pune, with no adult present at the time, in a case that has led to the arrest of a 24-year-old man under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, police said.
The incident took place on January 31 when the minor was alone at home and went into labour. According to police, she gave birth without any assistance and reportedly cut the umbilical cord herself. Family members later found the newborn lying near a window inside the house.
The matter came to light when the girl’s elder sister, who is married, visited the home and noticed blood stains on the kitchen floor. While checking the house, she discovered the infant and questioned the teenager, who then disclosed that she had delivered the baby earlier that day.
Initially, the family did not inform the authorities due to fear of social stigma. However, later that evening, the girl’s health worsened, prompting relatives to take both the mother and the newborn to a private hospital. Due to the high cost of treatment, they returned home but were later admitted to another hospital in the Camp area when her condition deteriorated further.
During questioning, the girl told her sister that she had been in a relationship with a 24-year-old man for nearly a year. Police said the accused allegedly established physical relations with the minor in March 2025 after assuring her of marriage, which resulted in the pregnancy.
“Since the victim is a minor and the accused was aware of her age, we have registered a case under the POCSO Act,” said Jayant Rajurkar, senior police inspector at Samarth police station. He confirmed that the accused has been arrested and remanded to magistrate custody.
Police added that both the girl and the newborn are stable and have been placed under the care of the Child Welfare Committee (CWC). Further investigation is ongoing.
According to officials, the minor lost her father at an early age, after which her mother remarried. She and her brother were staying with their aunt, and the girl was often left alone at home while other family members were at work.
