- Second Phase of Andra Bhama Askhed Project to be Completed by June 2025
In view of the anticipated population growth by 2041, efforts are underway to establish sustainable water supply sources for the city. The first phase of the Andra Bhama Askhed project has already brought 100 MLD (million liters per day) of water into the city, with the second phase expected to be completed by June 2025. This phase will provide an additional 168 MLD of water. Additionally, the “status quo” order on the Pavana Closed Water Pipeline Project has been revoked, and the capacity of the Nigdi Water Purification Center has been enhanced. Construction of water tanks and new pipelines is ongoing in various included villages. Importantly, a proposal has been submitted to the state government to reserve 760 MLD of water from the Mulshi Dam for future needs, according to BJP MLA Mahesh Landge.
Mahesh Landge, the MLA from the Bhosari constituency, engaged with Pimpri-Chinchwad residents via social media on the topic of “Water Self-Sufficiency in Pimpri-Chinchwad.”
MLA Landge highlighted that Pimpri-Chinchwad is a rapidly developing city alongside Pune, the cultural and educational capital of Maharashtra. It is the fifth-largest city in Maharashtra and the 19th largest in India. Often referred to as a “Mini India,” the city, known for its smart city initiatives, is now recognized as a metro city. This is indeed a matter of pride for the residents of Pimpri-Chinchwad.
Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipality was initially established on March 4, 1970, followed by the establishment of the Municipal Corporation on October 11, 1982. At that time, the city’s population was around 235,000. Over the last 42 years, the population has surged to over 3 million. The city’s boundaries were expanded twice, in 1982 and 1997, but the creation of new water sources did not keep pace.
Pimpri-Chinchwad’s Support Was Pivotal
Since the city’s establishment, the Pavana Dam has been the sole water source. With the growing population and urbanization, it became crucial to develop new water sources to avoid a water crisis. Many societies in the newly included villages still face water scarcity. This is why, in 2014, we promised to address the water issues of Pimpri-Chinchwad and contested the Bhosari Assembly elections with this commitment. The residents of Pimpri-Chinchwad supported us, giving me the opportunity to represent them in the legislature. With the support of then-Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, we undertook the Andra Bhama-Askhed Water Supply Project, reserving 268 MLD of water for the residents of areas like Talwade, Chikhali, Moshi, Dudulgaon, and Charholi in the Bhosari constituency, stated MLA Landge.
Aiming for Sustainable Development in Pimpri-Chinchwad
Under the Andra-Bhama Askhed Water Supply Scheme, a 100 MLD jackwell has been constructed at Talwade, along with the Talwade to Chikhali Water Purification Center, a 100 MLD water supply pipeline, and a 100 MLD water purification center. A work order for a 168 MLD water purification center has also been issued. The work on constructing a jackwell at the Bhama-Askhed Dam and directly supplying water via a pipeline is progressing well, and the project is expected to be fully operational by June 2025. “I have worked with utmost sincerity to make Pimpri-Chinchwad self-reliant in terms of water resources and to ensure the city’s sustainable development. Development is a continuous process, and with your continued support and blessings, I am confident that the goal of “Water Self-Sufficiency in Pimpri-Chinchwad” will be achieved. I have always worked with the belief that “as we journey from the body to the divine, we owe a duty to the land we inhabit,” and I will continue to do so, assured MLA Mahesh Landge to the residents of Pimpri-Chinchwad.
