MPCB Pune Cracks Down On Automotive Sector Over Air and Water Pollution Violations

After acting against Ready Mix Concrete (RMC) plants for violating air pollution norms, the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) has intensified its crackdown on the automotive industry in Pune. Within a week, the board issued more than five notices to automotive manufacturing and service companies over air and water pollution concerns.

The notices were served to firms operating in Maval tehsil (two), and one each in Talegaon Dabhade, Warje, and Gultekdi. These companies are involved in vehicle repair and spare parts distribution, stated a report as per Hindustan Times.

This enforcement follows a surge in complaints about deteriorating air quality and high levels of PM2.5 particulate matter. As part of a special campaign, the MPCB had earlier taken strict action against RMC plants in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad, issuing closure notices to 11 and show cause notices to 17 others.

Now extending its focus to the automotive sector, MPCB has cited several units for both air and water pollution violations. Companies lacking sewage treatment facilities have been asked to install treatment plants and ensure that untreated waste is not discharged into nearby water bodies like rivers and lakes. At least two units have been directed to submit a bank guarantee of ₹50,000 each, along with a detailed action-taken report.

In its order, MPCB stated, “Action has been taken under Section 33A of the Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1974, and Section 31A of the Air (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1981.” Notices have been served to units operating without necessary approvals, and each has been assigned a deadline to submit their compliance report.
