Pune: Electricity consumers in the Pune circle of Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Co. Ltd (MSEDCL) are now being required to pay an additional security deposit along with their electricity bills for the month of April/May. The power company has appealed to its customers to pay this additional amount, and has offered the facility of up to six monthly installments to make it easier for them to do so.

According to clause 13.1 of the Electricity Supply Code 2021 of the Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission, a security deposit is levied on electricity consumers. The security deposit amount is calculated every year and is based on the average electricity consumption of the customer in the previous year. The security deposit for monthly bill customers is twice the average monthly bill, while quarterly bill customers pay one and a half times their average quarterly bill.

The interest amount on the security deposit paid by the customer is adjusted through the electricity bill and paid back to the customer at the rate equivalent to the Reserve Bank of India rate.

In Pune, customers are now being given a separate bill for the additional security deposit amount in April. They can pay this amount in up to six monthly installments, as mentioned in the security deposit bill. Low-pressure electricity consumers can also pay the additional security deposit amount from the comfort of their homes through the Mahadiscom website or MSEDCL mobile app.
