MSEDCL cracks down electricity thefts and unauthorised use of electricity in Pune

Pune: Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Co. Ltd. (MSEDCL), Pune Regional Division has caught 499 cases of theft of electricity worth ₹ 4.63 crore and 264 cases of unauthorized use of electricity worth ₹1.34 crore.

A stern campaign against electricity theft was implemented in the month of January and 7,567 electricity connections have been inspected.

In 224 cases of electricity theft, ₹2.7 crores have been recovered, while in 71 cases of unauthorized electricity consumption, ₹20.56 lakh were recovered. A total of 2,770 electricity connections were checked in Pune circle. In this, 212 cases of unauthorized electricity consumption and 225 cases of electricity theft have been revealed.

Ankush Nale, Regional Director of Pune Regional Division has directed to intensify the campaign against electricity theft. According to Section 135 and 136 of the Electricity Act 2003, theft of electricity is a punishable offence with imprisonment of up to 3 years.

Ahmednagar Sessions Court has recently sentenced an accused to two years imprisonment in the electricity theft case. Therefore, Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Co. Ltd. has appealed to consumers to refrain from electricity theft.
