Mumbai Coastal Road Expansion: CM Devendra Fadnavis Opens Northbound Arch Bridge, Enhancing Connectivity Across Key City Areas

Mumbai: Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, accompanied by Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and ministers Mangal Prabhat Lodha and Ashish Shelar, inaugurated the northbound connecting arch bridge of Mumbai’s Coastal Road on Sunday. The event was marked by a convoy of 11 vintage cars accompanying the Chief Minister.

The newly opened section enables motorists to seamlessly travel from the Bandra-Worli Sea Link (BWSL) onto the Coastal Road without the need to detour onto Dr. Annie Besant Road. This section will be open to the public starting Monday as Reported by TOI.

Additionally, four new interchange arms were inaugurated—three at Worli and one at Haji Ali—providing improved connectivity to key areas such as Worli, Prabhadevi, Lower Parel, and Lotus Junction.

Key Features of the Coastal Road Project:

  • The Coastal Road project, developed in phases, connects Mumbai’s southern tip at Nariman Point to its northern tip at Dahisar.
  • The first phase, spanning 10.58 km from Princess Street flyover to the Worli end of the BWSL, is 94% complete.
  • On average, 18,000 to 20,000 vehicles use this route daily.
  • Since its opening on March 12, 2024, approximately five million vehicles have utilized the Coastal Road.

New Infrastructure Highlights:

  • Two bridges have been constructed to facilitate traffic flow between South and North Mumbai via the BWSL.
  • The southern approach bridge was inaugurated on September 12, 2024, allowing northbound traffic and reducing congestion.
  • The newly inaugurated northbound bridge, 827 meters long, now allows traffic to flow in both directions.
  • The construction involved a bow-arch string girder beam weighing approximately 2,400 metric tons.

The Coastal Road project aims to improve connectivity and ease congestion across Mumbai, with further developments underway.
