Motorists in Mumbai experienced a streamlined journey from Marine Drive to Terminal 2 of the city airport with the partial opening of the new Coastal Road bridge linking to the Bandra-Worli Sea Link.

On the first day of its partial opening, the new bowstring arch bridge on the Mumbai Coastal Road provided a smoother and faster drive for commuters. During non-peak hours, the trip from Marine Drive to Terminal 2 (T2) was completed in just 22 minutes, while during rush hours, the journey took 52 minutes.

Motorists have welcomed the new route, with feedback such as an X user’s post praising the significant time savings: “On my way back from the High Court, I took the newly inaugurated arch bridge connecting the Coastal Road to the Sea Link. Opened just yesterday, the journey from the Bombay High Court to Bandra took just 18 minutes. This new route is a major relief for Mumbaikars, significantly easing travel time.”

A test conducted by a news agency revealed that travel time from Marine Drive to the BWSL toll booth was reduced to just 12 minutes, even during peak traffic times. The Western Express Highway (WEH) route, which usually takes 10 minutes from Bandra to T2 around noon, extended to 40 minutes during the evening rush due to heavy traffic.

The new route, featuring a signal-free drive and scenic views of the city’s skyline and coastline, has been praised by motorists. With nearly 60% of drivers using FASTag, toll transactions were quick and smooth.

The pleasant drive might have been aided by the Ganeshotsav holiday, which likely reduced road congestion.
