Mumbai, July 20 : The Maharashtra Goods and Services Tax Bill 2023 amending the Maharashtra Goods and Services Tax (MGST) Act 2017 was passed in the state Assembly on Thursday.

Deputy Chief Minister and Finance Minister Ajit Pawar presented the bill as per the ‘One Country, One Tax System’ formula.
“After the central government amended the central law, it is mandatory for all the states to make the necessary amendments in the relevant laws,” Pawar explained and said that this Bill proposes to amend section 22 and schedule 1 of the MGST Act, 2017.

Under this, amendments are mainly proposed in the sections related to tribunals, data archival policy, simplification of provisions of offences (decriminalisation and simplification of compounding of offences), input tax credit, registration and refund, he pointed.

The minister also said that the suggested reforms have been proposed keeping in mind the simplification of the procedure and the interest of taxpayers.
As per the recommendations of the Central Goods and Services Tax (CGST) Council, the central government has amended the CGST Act, 2017 under the Finance Act, 2023 passed on March 30.

Against this background, in order to maintain uniformity in the provisions of the CGST Act, 2017 and the MGST Act, 2017, it was necessary to amend the MGST Act, 2017, added Pawar.
