Mumbai News : Railways Commence Construction of Airoli-Kalwa Suburban Railway Corridor
The initiation of a new suburban railway corridor between Airoli and Kalwa aims to streamline trans-harbour trains, alleviating congestion at Thane station.
In a significant development, the Indian Railways has commenced the construction of a new suburban railway corridor connecting Airoli and Kalwa.
This strategic project, initiated to facilitate trans-harbour trains, particularly those bypassing Thane, reached a milestone on Tuesday night with the installation of a bridge and the initiation of miscellaneous works.
Phased Approach: The project is divided into two phases, with Phase-I focusing on the completion of Digha Gaon station. This phase, along with the completion of bridge no. 36/4 and 36/5, has already concluded. Phase-II involves the construction of the suburban corridor connecting Airoli and Kalwa.
Elevated Link: The new corridor will run on an elevated section after Digha station, passing through parts of Kalwa. This elevated link is designed to accommodate direct trains from Vashi-Belapur to Kalyan.
Cost and Specifications: The tentative cost of the Airoli-Kalwa railway line is estimated at Rs 476 crore. The construction includes an elevated Kalwa station with platforms, booking office, connected foot under bridges, staircases, and related infrastructure. The rail flyover incorporates a ballastless track for enhanced efficiency.
Decongesting Thane Junction: The direct line connecting Airoli and Kalwa seeks to alleviate congestion at Thane junction, reducing the load on the station. Additionally, it aims to decrease travel time for passengers commuting from Navi Mumbai to Kalwa and beyond.
Relief and Rehabilitation: To address the relief and rehabilitation of Project Affected Households, 868 tenements have been earmarked at Bhayandarpada, Ghodbunder Road. However, joint verification at Bhola Nagar and Shivaji Nagar is currently delayed due to protests by local dwellers and representatives.
The Airoli-Kalwa suburban railway corridor signifies a vital infrastructure development, enhancing connectivity, reducing travel time, and optimizing the efficiency of the railway network in the Mumbai metropolitan region.
