Pune, February 4, 2026: Traffic on the Mumbai–Pune Expressway and the old Mumbai–Pune Highway (NH-48) was severely disrupted on Tuesday after a gas tanker met with an accident and developed a leak near the Adoshi Tunnel.

As a safety precaution, authorities imposed traffic halts on the affected stretch, resulting in heavy congestion on both key routes connecting Mumbai and Pune.

An urgent traffic advisory has been issued, with commuters strongly advised to completely avoid the Lonavala–Khandala ghat section until the gas leak is fully contained and the area is declared safe. Emergency response teams, traffic police and highway authorities are currently deployed at the site. Heavy vehicles have been instructed to stop at designated parking bays and food plazas until further notice.

To manage traffic flow, motorists have been diverted to alternative routes, though officials have warned that travel time may increase significantly.

Traffic Diversions in Place:

Via Tamhini Ghat (for South Mumbai and Navi Mumbai):

Pune → Paud → Tamhini Ghat → Mangaon → Indapur → Mumbai

Via Malshej Ghat (for Thane, Kalyan and suburban areas):

Pune → Chakan → Narayangaon → Malshej Ghat → Murbad → Kalyan/Thane → Mumbai

Via Bhimashankar–Manchar–Junnar (for North Mumbai and Palghar):

Pune → Manchar → Junnar → Malshej stretch → Mumbai

Authorities said these diversions could add three to five hours to the journey. Commuters have been advised to carry adequate fuel, drinking water and food before travelling.

Meanwhile, railway services between Mumbai and Pune remain unaffected. Officials stated that the Intercity Express, Deccan Queen and Sinhagad Express are the most reliable travel options for passengers not using private vehicles.

Emergency helpline numbers have been activated for public assistance, including the Expressway Control Room (9822498224) and Highway Police helplines (9833498334 / 100).

Authorities have urged citizens to cooperate with traffic personnel and strictly follow advisories until normal traffic movement is restored.
