Mumbai/Pune, February 16, 2026: Travelers on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway faced a massive 32-hour disruption on February 3 after a propane gas tanker overturned near Khopoli, blocking traffic heading to Mumbai. Commuters were stranded for hours, with women and children facing particular hardship due to the lack of basic facilities. Many vehicles had to be canceled, adding to the chaos.

Despite the emergency, tolls were being collected at the Khalapur toll plaza. Following public outrage and intervention by Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray, local party officials met with MSRDC, IRB, and traffic police authorities to demand refunds for stranded travelers. In response, the IRB company has assured that toll fees collected during the disruption will be refunded.

The accident highlighted gaps in expressway facilities, including inadequate restrooms and emergency support for women and children. Thackeray criticized the authorities for prioritizing toll collection over commuter safety, stressing that building the road also comes with the responsibility of providing proper facilities and preparedness for emergencies.
