Heartwarming scenes from rural Haryana have captured widespread attention online after a solo Dutch traveller was welcomed into a local family’s home when she simply asked for a place to set up her tent.

The traveller, identified as Meike Hijman from the Netherlands, has been journeying across India on her motorcycle, documenting her experiences along the way. During her ride through a village in Haryana, she approached a woman working in a field and politely asked if she could pitch her tent nearby for the night.

Language, however, became an immediate barrier. The woman did not understand English, so she called her nephew, Tushar Gujjar, to help translate and understand the traveller’s request.

On her Instagram account, where she has over 56,000 followers, Meike later shared a video of the encounter with the caption explaining that she had asked a rural Indian family if she could camp in their garden.

What followed surprised her. Rather than allowing her to sleep outside in a tent, the family insisted she stay indoors for her comfort and safety. Footage later uploaded to YouTube showed Meike relaxing inside the home, spending time with the family, and sharing warm conversations despite cultural and language differences.

She was treated not as a stranger but as an honoured guest — offered tea, home-cooked meals, and a proper place to rest for the night. The moment beautifully reflected the Indian philosophy of “Atithi Devo Bhava,” meaning “The Guest is God.”

The video quickly resonated with viewers across social media. Many praised the family’s sincerity and generosity, saying such gestures represent the genuine warmth found in India’s villages.

One user commented that they were certain the family would never have allowed her to sleep outside and must have made space for her inside. Another simply expressed admiration for rural India. A third well-wisher urged Meike to prioritise her safety during her travels, suggesting hotels or designated camping spots while also welcoming her to the country with respect and concern. Yet another user shared a personal perspective, calling Haryana one of the most hospitable places and noting that people there care for guests wholeheartedly, regardless of their resources.
