Gorai Mangrove Park nears completion with a Singapore-style boardwalk, while a large tourism project with an amusement and water park is also being planned for the region.

Mumbai is set to welcome a brand-new tourist destination this December as the Gorai Mangrove Park nears completion. After the success of the Malabar Hill Heritage Nature Walk, the city is preparing to introduce another eco-tourism attraction, offering Mumbaikars a chance to enjoy nature without leaving the city.

About 90 percent of the work on the dedicated mangrove park at Gorai is already completed. Spread across 8 hectares along the Gorai creek, this will be India’s first mangrove-themed park designed to raise awareness about the importance of mangroves in coastal ecosystems. Mangroves help control flooding and preserve biodiversity along Mumbai’s coastline, making the park both educational and environmentally significant.

At the heart of the project is a 700–750-metre-long wooden elevated boardwalk, 2.4 metres wide, built entirely without cutting a single mangrove tree. Inspired by similar nature trails in Singapore, Abu Dhabi and Thailand, the boardwalk will take visitors directly through the dense mangrove habitat, offering a close view of the ecosystem and its unique flora and fauna. A double-storey Nature Interpretation Centre is also being constructed to host exhibitions, workshops and environmental awareness programmes.

The park, located near Gorai jetty, is expected to boost eco-tourism in the northern suburbs. After Gorai, Dahisar Mangrove Park has been planned as the next phase of this green development, strengthening Mumbai’s eco-tourism corridor.

Alongside the mangrove park, a much larger tourism project is being revived for the Manori–Gorai–Uttan belt. The Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation has renewed plans to transform Gorai into a major leisure hub. A 100-acre zone is being planned that will feature a massive theme-based amusement and water park spread across 30–40 acres. The remaining land will be dedicated to eco-friendly tourism, gardens, nature activities, community spaces and walking trails.

This project falls under the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority, which designated the area as a Recreation and Tourism Development Zone. Two new tenders have already been floated to appoint a consultant who will create the master plan, study the terrain, and ensure the project aligns with environmental norms. Public-private partnerships will be explored to fund and develop the tourism hub, and suggestions have been invited to ensure the plan benefits both the local community and the environment.

With the Gorai Mangrove Park set to open in December, and a larger tourism development underway, Mumbai’s coastal stretch is poised to offer residents and visitors a richer, greener and more engaging travel experience.
