Musical program to mark 100th birth anniversary of Bharat Ratna Pt Bhimsen Joshi

Pune, January 28: The Arya Sangeet Prasarak Mandal, organizers of the iconic Sawai Gandharva Bhimsen Mahotsav and an organization founded by Bharat Ratna Pandit Bhimsen Joshi will be organizing a special program titled ‘Abhivadan’ to mark the 100th birth anniversary of Bharat Ratna Pandit Bhimsen Joshi.

Programme details of Abhivadan

The program will take place at Sawai Gandharva Smarak near Rahul Theater at Shivaji Nagar between February 4 – 6 and the entry to this program would be free on a first come first serve basis. The program will begin every day at 4:30 pm.

“Abhivadan will present the mix of the artists from the Kirana Gharana, especially the disciples of the Pt Bhimsen and some young promising artists”, informed Shrinivas Joshi, Executive President of the Arya Sangeet Prasarak Mandal.

The first day of ‘Abhivadan’ will begin with the performance of S. Akash (Flute) and Yadnesh Raikar (Violin). S Akash has taken early lessons in flute from Pandit Venkatesh Godkhindi and is currently learning flute and classical music from Pandit Ronu Mujumdar and Pandit Jayateerth Mevundi. Yadnesh is a son and a disciple of renowned Violinist Pandit Milind Raikar.

The second performance of the first day will be of Ronkini Gupta (Vocal), a trained classical singer and a distinction holder, Sangeet Visharad from Gandharv Mahavidyalaya in Hindustani Classical. In her formative years, she was trained under Chandrakant Apte, an exponent of the Gwalior Gharana. Later she learned from Ustaad Dilshad Khan, Pandit Samresh Chowdhary, and Late Ustad Abdul Rashid Khan Saheb. The first day will end with the performance of Pandit Upendra Bhat, a senior disciple of Pt Bhimsen Joshi.

On February 5, the program will start with the Solo performance of young, promising Sarod Player Abhishek Borkar. He is a son and disciple of Pandit Shekhar Borkar, a noted Sarood Player from the Maihar Senia Gharana. This will be followed by Sniti Mishra (Vocal). The second day will end with a performance of Shrinivas Joshi (Vocal), a son and disciple of Bharat Ratna Pandit Bhimsen Joshi.

On February 6 will commence with the performance of Anand Bhate, a well-known vocalist of Kirana Gharana and the disciple of Pandit Bhimsen Joshi. Dr Prabha Atre, a veteran vocalist from the Kirana Gharana to whom Padma Vibhushan award has been announced on the eve of 73rd Republic day will pay tribute to Pt Bhimsen Joshi thereafter. The program will conclude with a special video of Pandit Bhimsen Joshi.
